The island’s capital is Castries, considered the largest city on the island and the main port of residence. In the past, the island was a British and French colonial colony and boasts original historic buildings preserved from this period, alongside modern-looking, unique architecture. Another must-see city during the visit to the island is the historic town of Soufrier, founded by the French in the 18th century, where time seems to have frozen. The city is located where the volcano used to be, hence its name – “sulfur in the air” resulting from strong sulfur smells coming from the nearby volcano.
